Most people have too many options, and they rarely choose the tougher one.
America turns 250 this week.
Two hundred and fifty years built entirely on people who refused to wait for comfortable. The founding was a calculated bet made by people who were scared, outgunned, and not at all sure it was going to work. They did it anyway.
That's the part which we should pay closer attention.

I used to pray for easier.
Business ownership is hard. Managing people is hard. Making the right call when you don’t have enough resources, hard. For years my prayer sounded something like: God, can you just smooth this out a little?
I stopped praying that prayer.
I stopped because I finally realized, discomfort is the gym. Those moments are growth moments that prepare you for bigger things.
It means you're close enough to something that matters to actually feel the resistance. It means you're not sitting still. The moment things get frictionless, that's when I start worrying, because frictionless usually means you've stopped pushing against anything real.
I don't pray for comfort anymore. I pray for clarity and conviction. The hard part, I've learned to expect.
The CIO who's trying to modernize infrastructure over the objection of a board that doesn't see the risk yet. The IT director who inherited four years of technical debt and a team that's burned out. The executive who keeps getting handed more scope without more resources.
Every one of them is looking for the moment when it gets easier.
It doesn't. The nature of the challenge just changes.
And here's what I've come to believe: the leaders who last aren't the ones who found a way to make it easier. They're the ones who got comfortable being uncomfortable. They stopped treating friction as a signal that something's wrong and started treating it as proof that something's working.
That reframe changes everything.
When I stopped praying for comfort, I started making better decisions. Because I wasn't trying to escape the hard thing anymore, I was trying to understand it. I started asking different questions. Not why is this so hard? but what is this resistance teaching me?
Me working in 15 min blocks, evenings and weekends. I know slow progress is still progress.
The most important moves we've made at Alliance in the last two years were all uncomfortable.
Saying we're going to stop being a technology company for everyone and go deep into one vertical — uncomfortable. Hiring a Chief Revenue Officer for the first time and giving him real authority over revenue — uncomfortable. Telling existing clients that our model is changing — deeply uncomfortable.
Every one of those decisions created friction, but not making those decisions could have had far worse consequences.
If you're in a hard season right now, a pivot that isn't landing cleanly yet, a team that's not aligned, a budget conversation that keeps going sideways, I want to say something to you directly:
There is a decision just around the corner that will help you break free. But hear this, even if you solve your problem, it doesn’t mean you have removed your discomfort. Growth decisions shift that discomfort to another area. Growth is hard, but it’s worth it.
Stop praying for easier. Start asking what the hard thing is trying to show you.
America wasn't built by people waiting for conditions to improve. It was built by people who believed in themselves and knew a better life was just on the other side of the pain.
250 years later, that's still the standard.
Until next week,
—Jared
